A Day in Monteverde: A Zip in the Clouds

in

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve sits along the continental divide that splits Costa Rica between the Pacific and Caribbean. Combined with the altitude of almost 6,000 feet, the clouds here are constantly forming and deciding to go either east or west. This creates a veritable “Cloud Forest” with clouds hanging low to the ground and providing the perfect tree canopy for ZIPLINING!

Monteverde Extremo Park: Superman Zipline

There are zipline courses all across Costa Rica, but I felt like the special tree canopy of the Cloud Forest would really add to the experience. The Monteverde Extremo Park (3.5 hours, $50/person) is meant for “big kids” due to the extreme-ness that the name suggests. We opted for the Superman option, which has two sections where you are attached to the zipline face down on your stomach. You legitimately feel like you’re flying! (Obviously, I do not recommend for anyone who is afraid of heights.)

Monteverde Extremo Park: Longest Line and Tarzan Swing

There is an amazing section where you crisscross over a valley three times that is over a quarter mile each time. You really get the chance to sit and enjoy the view. Although be prepared to double up, so that you’re heavy enough to make it across. You will probably want to go with someone you don’t mind getting close too. There is also a really fun Tarzan Swing portion that I would have easily done 20 times in a row.

Monteverde Extremo Park: Superman Finale

The grand finale of the zipline course is crossing the valley one last time in the Superman position. Not for the faint of heart, you first have to climb up to a wobbly platform and wait as the dread sets in. I am not scared of heights, but started to get nervous as there was a delay because my brother was too light and didn’t make it to the end. An employee had to zip down the line to help him pull himself down to the end. The way it work is they attach your feet into a second harness and release you down the line. You really feel like you’re flying as you look around the valley until the wind makes your eyes water too much. It was magical.

The very last line is a short one through a tunnel again in Superman position to get you back to the start. On this one they let you put your arms out like the Supergirl you are.

Truly a walk in the clouds – how do you feel about ziplining and heights? Too extremo? Not extremo enough?
